YOUTH NEED TO TAKE LEADERSHIP ROLE

The Taber Community Against Drugs has contributed many positive ideas to
the community throughout its short existence.

However, its most recent idea could prove to be one of its best in the long
run.

Currently, TCAD, through its education and prevention subcommittee, is
looking at establishing a youth group in this community..

It would run similar to a service group. The young people would gather once
a week to do fun activities and to get acquainted with one another.

Another one is its main goals would be to provide service to the community
as a whole and provide feedback to TCAD concerning what needs or wants the
youth of Taber have.

The idea behind the group, in part, is to get young people not actively in
sports and other pursuits involved in a group.

Grade 9 and Grade 10 students, young people who will definitely be in the
community for at least a few more years, are the age range the TCAD
subcommittee is looking to attract.

Also in demand are young adults, between the ages of 20 and 30, to help
lead and provide direction to the youth group.

All in all, the youth group would seem to contain positives on many
different levels.

It would serve to get students, who may otherwise not be doing a whole lot,
active in their communities.

We all know, the busier someone is with positive activities, the less
likely they are to fall in with the bad crowd or get in trouble on their own.

Secondly, providing feedback to TCAD, direct from the youth of our
community, makes a whole lot of sense.

Adult groups can come up with all the ideas they want but ultimately, some
of the best ideas concerning youth come from the youth themselves.

Now, all that is needed is support from the young people in our community.

There needs to be a committed group that steps up to help promote the
group, and its events, throughout Taber.

It is hoped the youth group will get underway sometime in June, which would
be a perfect time.

With school quickly coming to an end, any additional activities generated
by the group for the youth of this community would certainly be a
tremendous help throughout the summer.
