DRIVER ON SYABU; SO RESORT STAFF CORCED TO WALK HOME

Kota Kinabalu: Some 30 staff of a resort were forced to walk all the
way home after the driver of a minibus in his 20s that was chartered
to transport them and a passenger were tested positive for Syabu.

A passenger in a separate minibus who was without any identification
document tried to escape by jumping off before the bus reached the
checkpoint but was caught.

Altogether 16 motorists were detained for suspected drug abuse and
drink-driving during the five-hour integrated traffic police operation
until the wee hours Sunday.

Of 16, six were found positive for Syabu in urine tests. They were
among more than 60 motorists checked, including urine and breathalyser
tests, at two blocks mounted at Jalan Kepayan and Jalan Kolam.

It involved three officers and 20 personnel from the city traffic,
crime prevention and narcotics crime investigations branches led by
City Traffic and Public Order Chief DSP M. Chandra, and was aimed at
detecting illegal racing, drink-driving, drug abuse and other traffic
violations.

Thirty-one traffic summonses were also issued at both the road blocks.
One of those summonned was a Taiwanese who was found driving without
any identification document.

It was learnt that the Taiwanese took over the steering from the
vehicle owner, who claimed to be too tired to drive. They were just
arriving from the East Coast then.
