NOT SO ENABLING

Ajax, Ont. -- Preston Manning says conservatives believe in
"governments that enable others, rather than dictating to or
pre-empting them." It's an interesting thought, if only it were true.
Alas, it seems that this "principle" applies only in the area of
finance and economics.

Would Mr. Manning care to explain the conservative opposition to
same-sex marriage and legalizing marijuana? It hardly seems enabling
to want to make same-sex marriage illegal again.

Truth is, conservatives very much like to dictate when matters of
so-called morality are at issue. They won't get in your way if you
decide to trample on a few people while making a few bucks along the
way, but don't you dare decide to get married to a same-sex partner.

Sad, really.
