MOHAWKS UPSET BY N.Y. TIMES ARTICLE

It's An Age Old Story Of One Step Forward And Two Steps Back.

A splashy, front-page article in the Sunday edition of The New York
Times, a journalistic institution long considered the newspaper of
record, has caused an uproar in the native community of Akwesasne, as
residents once again find themselves painted as nothing more than a
group of smugglers and criminals protective of one another and living
a life of lawlessness along the picturesque Canada-U. S. border.

"To me, the article is an example of how shoddy The New York Times
has become as far as journalism goes," said Darren Bonaparte, a
well-known resident of Akwesasne who recently published a book on the
region's history.

"When will the decent, hard-working Mohawks make the front page of
The New York Times?"

Under the headline, "Tribal Underworld: Drug Traffickers Find Haven
in Shadows of Indian Country," Times reporter Sarah Kershaw takes
readers on a journey through the Mohawk reserve, pointing out the
"million-dollar mansions with high gates and elaborate fences that
are being built in a place with an unemployment rate of about 50 per
cent, and where tumbledown government housing was once the common sight."
