Dubro DEMAND FOR DRUGS REMAINS Re: A Family Affair, Nov. 23. The massive police move against organized crime in Montreal yesterday is the first time ever the new organized crime statutes have been used against the Mafia in Canada. And the coverage in the National Post by Adrian Humphreys and others was in-depth and superb! But the charges will take years to hear and adjudicate, and most of the bosses charged will likely be out on bail by Monday. In the meantime the drugs will flow and be readily available from all the usual street level outlets. And organized crime will continue to flourish and even grow in influence in Montreal, Toronto and across Canada. The fundamental problem of the widespread public demand for pot and other drugs must be dealt with before organized crime can be truly defeated in Canada. It was less a "tsunami" than a small wave or a ripple in the complex and burgeoning world of organized crime in Canada. James R. Dubro Toronto - --- MAP posted-by: Beth Wehrman
