DRUGGED DRIVING PLAN NOT ENOUGH

So, the federal Conservative government is about to unveil
legislation targeting those who are under the influence of illicit
drugs while driving.

Forgive us if we don't break out the party hats and streamers just
yet. The reality is hundreds of Canadians continue to die each year
as a result of people driving impaired, and our so-called tough laws
on drinking and driving aren't nearly tough enough.

The initiative itself is a good one, as studies have shown clearly
that being under the influence of drugs, even marijuana, can have a
serious impact on motor function and decision making skills.

But, if our law courts continue to deal with offenders with kid
gloves, as often is the case, they won't face any serious punishment
until after they've killed someone, and even then, serious punishment
isn't a slam dunk.

It goes back to what has become an excruciating plea from the
Canadian public -- enforce the laws that exist in our land.

Any effort to reduce the number of people driving under the influence
on our roads is worthwhile, but it is time our courts started driving
the point home that if you are going to drive after drinking, or
drugging, you are going to face serious consequences.

A fine and probation just isn't enough for aiming a lethal weapon at
innocent people because someone is selfish, ignorant or just plain stupid.
