OFFICER SHOOTS LUNGING DOG IN THE LEG IN DRUG RAID

A city police officer shot a dog in the leg Tuesday night when it
lunged at officers during a drug raid on Alverstone Street.

Bloody paw prints were visible on the front stoop of the house
Wednesday and the loud barking of a second dog could be heard inside.

Police said the dog, a Cane Corso, was being treated for its bullet
wound and should recover.

Const. Jacqueline Chaput said the dog was shot as officers served a
search warrant at [address redacted]

"The dog lunged at the officers," she said. "It was shot to prevent
injury to the officers."

A neighbour said when she saw police and heard the shot she
barricaded herself in her house. "I heard all this yelling and then
'bang'," she said. "I just freaked out."

Another neighbour said the dogs are gentle despite their appearance.

"They look scarier than Rotties (Rottweilers)," she said.

Chaput said after searching the house officers seized 32 ounces of
powdered cocaine, weigh scales and baggies. The drugs have an
estimated street value of about $37,000.

Police also seized an unloaded nine-millimetre handgun and ammunition.

A man, 29, remains in custody charged with multiple drug and firearms offences.
