A GOOD PROGRAM

Re 'Sharply Divided' (Oct. 6) about the needle exchange program: Our
drug policies should be measured by the degree to which they reduce
the death, disease, harm and suffering caused by abuse or misuse of drugs.

In this way, syringe exchange programs are a resounding success. The
World Health Organization, scientific research and the experience of
such programs around the world show that these programs reduce the
spread of hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS, and do not increase or promote drug use.

Given the increase in fentanyl-related overdoses recently, how can
anyone in their right mind argue against proven, effective programs.
