DETOX BEDS ON THE WAY

The Vancouver Island Health Authority is preparing to announce soon
the addition of 16 withdrawal management and stabilization beds for
substance-addicted youth-- six of which are going to be in Nanaimo.

The province gave VIHA $1.2 million last spring for the new
addictions treatment resources. Nanaimo is getting three withdrawal
management beds, or detox beds, and three residential stabilization beds.

The beds were supposed to be in place over the summer, but the
organization responsible for developing a plan to put the beds in the
community said in August it was not ready to open them for use.

A VIHA spokesperson said it is still not known when an announcement
will come on when the beds are available.
