METH MAG EDITORS RECOGNIZED

Four North Shore students have been recognized by the provincial
government for their contributions to community safety and crime prevention.

In the fall of 2005, Keith Lynn Alternate secondary students Kristen
Nash, Jennifer Aitken, Rilee Burrows, and Sarah Fly started working
on creating, producing, designing and publishing a crystal meth
magazine to raise awareness among their peers about the dangers of
the drug. They were assisted by their teacher Rae Schidlo.

There were 3,000 copies of the full-colour, 20-page magazine printed
and distributed to North Shore high schools, community recreation
centres and youth clinics.

The magazine contains art work, poetry, information on what's in
crystal meth and its effects, and contact information for local resources.

The magazine takes a no-holds-barred-approach, and while graphic in
nature, the students told the North Shore News in the spring that it
tells the truth, which they hope will make their peers think twice
about trying the drug.

The Keith Lynn students were recipients of a Children or Youth
Leadership Award and were among 14 British Columbians recognized by
Solicitor General John Les at the 28th annual Community Safety and
Crime Prevention Awards ceremony held Sept. 22.
