RAINIER RED RIBBON RUN SET FOR OCT. 14

Rainier's third annual Red Ribbon Run to support drug and alcohol
abuse programs is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 14 at Rainier
Junior/Senior High School.

[Correction: due to an error in the press release, a prior version
of this story misstated the date of the run.]

This year's run, sponsored by the Rainier Together Coalition, occurs
at the track in conjunction with school cross country event,
offering an opportunity for participants to run with the teams from
five area schools. Runners and walkers can choose a slower pace or a
shorter distance.

There will be a 5K run, a 3K walk/run and a 1K walk/fun run.

Other activities include a sand-castle-building contest, raffles, a
t-shirt design competition and a rock-wall climb. There will be a
dunk tank and informational booths from agencies including Mothers
Against Drunk Driving and Columbia County Mental Health.

"We're hoping to get (Rainier School Superintendent) Michael Carter
in the dunk tank," Rainier Together Coalition President Marleen
Zytniowski said. "That's where the big bucks are."

Registration to compete is $5, though registration and a
commemorative T-shirt costs $15. Call Zytniowski for details or to
register at (503) 556-4215, extension. 260.

Money raised will fund the Rainier Together Coalition's efforts to
fight drug and alcohol abuse in the community.

Red Ribbon activities began as a way to commemorate the death of DEA
Agent Enrique Camarena, who was kidnapped and murdered in Mexico
City in 1985 trying to stop drug shipments coming into the United States.
