GROW WATCH ARRIVES

Another wrench is about to be thrown into Chilliwack's ongoing pot
problem.

Chilliwack RCMP have partnered with BC Hydro and the city's bylaw and
fire departments to implement Grow Watch, an innovative new program
which organizers hope will deter potential marijuana growers while
weeding out existing operations.

The program is simple, but requires at least 80 per cent of
neighbourhood residents to attend information sessions and obtain
subsequent certification to have their areas designated as working
under the Grow Watch program. Hard-to-miss signs will let growers know
neighbours are keeping their eyes peeled for illegal gardens.

"By teaching people how to detect grows we hope to deter criminals
from investing in neighbourhoods," explained Const. Krista Vrolyk.

"If they know 80 per cent of the people are educated and watching for
grows they'll probably choose a different neighbourhood to invest in."

A series of Grow Watch seminars are already scheduled, and Vrolyk is
quick to remind that grow-ops aren't limited to dilapidated ranchers.

Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP by calling Chilliwack's
Community Policing office at 604-792-8030. Grow Watch meetings are
scheduled to start at 7 p.m. June 7 Sardis secondary lecture hall;
June 9 City of Chilliwack council chambers; June 21 City of Chilliwack
council chambers and June 23 Sardis secondary lecture hall.
