PEQUANNOCK WANTS PUBLIC INPUT ON DRUG TESTING

PEQUANNOCK - Random drug testing of students will be the topic of a
public meeting being held by the school district Tuesday.

School officials plan to take questions and comments from the public
and make a presentation about drug testing options.

They are considering two options in particular: random testing of
students who are in extracurricular activities or park their cars on
campus, or allowing students to volunteer for random tests.

The district sent out 1,500 surveys to parents and guardians in April.
Of the 500 people who responded, 88 percent indicated that "some
additional drug test measures were needed."

District officials expect to develop drug testing regulations over the
summer, and distribute a drug and alcohol survey to students in the
high school and middle school during the next school year.

Tuesday's meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the Pequannock Township
High School Auditorium at 85 Sunset Rd.

Earlier this year, police arrested a high school student and two
former students allegedly involved in a steroid ring. Police have said
about a half-dozen students purchased steroids from the ring.
