CHILD SAFETY SEMINAR TO DISCUSS METH, WAYS TO BREAK ABUSE CYCLES

Registration has begun for the third annual Child Safety Conference on
April 19.

Organized by the Mental Health Association in Morgan County, the event
is a community collaboration to prevent and respond to crimes against
children as well as provide child safety education.

It lasts from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., and will feature four
speakers.

Cynthia Dudley, a family and consumer sciences teacher at Decatur High
School, will share her personal story of separation from her parents'
death, and the abuse and neglect from her legal guardian. She'll also
describe programs that help break the chains of cyclic abuse.

Brenda Caudle, nursing supervisor for Morgan County Schools, will
share how she dealt with three of her four children's deaths as well
as her experience as a foster and adoptive parent to abused and
medically fragile children. She'll also discuss opportunities to make
a difference.

Linda Tilly, executive director of a statewide child advocacy
organization, will explain types of injuries caused by improper child
restraints in vehicles as well as discuss statistics related to child
death, preventable teen death, abuse and neglect.

John "Rocky" Harnen Jr., special agent with the Drug Enforcement
Administration, will discuss the increasing problem of
methamphetamines and meth labs.

The cost is $25 for people who register before Wednesday and $35
afterward. The price includes lunch, handouts and continuing education
credit for nurses, social workers and counselors.
