ELLISON ACCUSES STATES OF NURTURING ILLEGAL DRUGS INDUSTRY

Federal Justice Minister Senator Chris Ellison has accused some states of
being too soft on drugs.

At a conference on crime prevention in Fremantle today, Senator Ellison
called for tougher laws to eliminate drug use.

Senator Ellison says weak cannabis laws in South Australia and Western
Australia nurture the drug industry.

He also says the New South Wales heroin injecting room has failed to help
addicts and led to an increase in crime.

"The heroin injecting gallery in New South Wales is $20 million failure,"
he said.

"It's done nothing in relation to treatment of those who've got an
addiction or bringing down crime, and can I say the soft cannabis laws in
South Australia and Western Australia will do the same thing - they will
increase crime."
