BOARD STICKS TO MARIJUANA STANCE

As the federal government inches toward decriminalizing marijuana, York's
police services board is sticking to its stance it is a bad idea.

Last week, the board considered a draft response against the proposed
softening of Canada's marijuana laws from the Canadian association of
police boards and, in doing so, reiterated its July 2003 position that, in
view of the numerous law enforcement and public safety concerns associated
with drug use, it opposes any legislation that results in decriminalization.

The decriminalization Bill C-17 is currently proceeding to committee hearings.
