METH-LACED POT WORRIES ADDICTIONS WORKERS

Brandon marijuana users should take a close look at what they're
rolling and smoking, warns a local addictions worker.

There are reports that marijuana is being sprayed with a liquid form
of methamphetamine - a dangerous mix addictions workers hope doesn't
catch on in Brandon.

The regional director of the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba, Terry
Gryschuk, said he's received reports in recent months from Winnipeg
police and Thompson addiction workers about potentially meth-laced
marijuana.

"In Thompson, our staff are hearing from clients that they believe
that there's something new being added to their marijuana,"

Gryschuk said, adding the reports haven't been confirmed with tests.
"They suspect that it's methamphetamine."

He's concerned marijuana users may become unwittingly addicted to the
methamphetamine, a potentially lethal stimulant.

"They may experience some danger," Gryschuk said, explaining those who
take the laced marijuana wouldn't know how much meth they're taking.

"They could have some severe physical effects unwittingly."

They could suffer a heart attack, stroke or other circulatory
problems. They could also develop a meth addiction.

"Someone can trick you into using this drug," Gryschuk
said.

People in the Brandon area have already reported cocaine and ecstasy
that has been mixed with methamphetamine, Gryschuk added.

Brandon Police Service Sgt. Shane Corley said it's generally known
that dealers and producers have mixed marijuana with other drugs such
as PCP (phencyclidine) for some time.

It's a hazard of using an illegal substance.

"There's no quality control, so when you put it in and roll it up, you
have no idea what's in there," Corley said.
