MEDICAL MARIJUANA ACTIVIST WEIRICK DIES

Jane Weirick, a prominent organizer for the legal use of cannabis
movement and a co-founder of the Patients Resource Center in San
Francisco, died on Tuesday. She was 46.

For the past year, Weirick was incapacitated by a rare nerve
disorder. She thought she might have suffered an allergic reaction
from exposure to a pesticide that was sprayed on marijuana she handled.

Since 1998 she had worked with pilots for the transportation of
medical marijuana at the Hayward airport. Her family and friends
remember her as a campaigner for access to safe and affordable
medical marijuana. She also helped launch the Medical Cannabis
Association, a trade group designed to establish practice standards
in the interests of growers, distributors and patients.

Weirick's daughter, Jessica Mery, said she remembers her mother as a
hard worker who fought for patients rights.

"She won the Honorary Goddess Award from High Times Magazine in
2000," she said. "She was very active in helping people."

Mery also said she will never forget how proud and supportive her
mother was when she graduated from Menlo Atherton High School with a
4.0 average after dropping out of Hayward High School.

"We come from a very strong maternal family line," Mery said. "And
she took me along with her."

In 2003, Weirick opened the Hayward Patients Resource Center, where
she worked to establish one of the first city agreements to permit
dispensaries. She was well-known for her devotion to medical patients
and for the use of medical marijuana, Mery said.

Weirick is survived by her husband of three years, Ray Carlson, and
her daughter, Jessica Mery. She also leaves many friends and comrades.
