METH IS THE WORST

I read your very tame story on methamphetamine ["Meth Explodes," Oct.
13-18] and the letter from the college teacher [Letters, Oct. 20-26]
who says that heroin is worse.

I have worked on the front line in public child welfare (Child
Protective Services) for the past 10 years in several counties in
California. I have met thousands of meth addicts. Meth is a scourge.
Meth makes reasonable people think the devil actually might exist.

Here are a few things meth does, though you probably won't see this
stuff in your community college classroom or scholarly journals.
People on meth slam their children's heads against walls and lock them
in closets.

You know that "heightened libido" thing? And the "psychosis" thing?
Put those two together and you have grown men who think a child is a
porn star who is coming on to them.

Not to mention the tweakers who are cooking all over the place,
poisoning everything. But that is just the cops talking. What would
they know about the true popularity of meth?

Heroin addiction is sad and there should be better treatment programs.
But if we have to prioritize-if we're going to talk about what's
better and what's "worse"-however many deaths can be attributed to
heroin are a lesser evil than the things that are done to thousands of
little kids in California every day.
