FIRST TAS DRUG DRIVING CASE TO BE HEARD

Tasmania's first court case involving a person allegedly testing
positive to a random roadside drug test will take place soon.

A 26-year-old man has been charged after being intercepted by police
at Devonport last month.

Western district police intercepted the man on Stoney Rise Road on
September 11.

He was given an oral fluid test, which tested positive to the presence
of illicit drugs.

Police say a later blood test confirmed the presence of
drugs.

Assistant Commissioner Scott Tilyard says since legislation allowing
for random roadside drug testing was introduced on July 1, 105 tests
have been conducted around the state.

Four other drivers have returned positive readings from oral fluid
tests, however police are awaiting the results of blood tests.

A three month assessment of the system has finished, and police are
evaluating the results.
