DRUG CHARGE LANDS HIM 10 YEARS

A former Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) student was sentenced to 10 
years' jail and 10 strokes of the rotan by the High Court yesterday after 
pleading guilty to an alternative charge of possessing cannabis.

Judge Datuk K. N. Segara ordered Fazil Ibrahim, 28, to serve his sentence 
from the date of his arrest on May 22, 2002.

In passing sentence, Segara said: "It is such a pity. You are a bright 
student, and it is sad to see your life go to waste.

"Maybe you were influenced by your friends. Unfortunately, you have 
committed an offence, and you have to bear the consequences."

Fazil, who was with UiTM's Art and Design Faculty admitted to having 230.2g 
of cannabis at Jalan 4/6 in Pandan Perdana, Ampang at 8.50pm on May 22, 2002.

He was charged under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and 
sentenced under Section 39A(2) of the same Act, which carries life 
imprisonment or not less than five years' jail, and not more than 10 
strokes of the rotan.
