LEDUC DRUG ACTION COMMITTEE RECRUITS TWO

Leduc's war on drugs just recruited two new members.

Mayor Greg Krischke and Ald. Dana Smith were formally appointed to the
Leduc Community Drug Action Committee (LCDAC) during the City of Leduc's
Sept. 12 regular council meeting.

"This really more of a housekeeping item," said director of Family and
Community Support Services Ted Tymchuk, adding Smith and Krischke had long
since expressed their interest in becoming involved with the LCDAC.

"In November 2004, the City of Leduc mayor and council met with RCMP and
FCSS to discuss a disturbing trend of crystal meth and cocaine use in our
community," Tymchuk continued.

"In the course of this discussion, it became clear that a more
comprehensive and co-ordinated drug strategy was needed for building a
drug-aware and drug-resilient community."

A high-profile drug sting and drug-related nightclub stabbing earlier this
year in Leduc helped illustrate the problem to the city, but Tymchuk
stressed Leduc isn't unlike other communities across the province facing
such issues.

Ald. Terry Lazowski said he wanted to see more co-operation with other
municipalities in combatting drugs.

"There must be synergies," Lazowski said.

"There has been talk of a provincial conference (on drugs)," said Tymchuk,
adding Leduc is definitely working with other communities. "There's no
sense re-inventing the wheel. There's a lot of good information out there."

The LCDAC includes representatives from the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse
Commission, RCMP, Child and Family Services, Correctional Services, the
Boys and Girls Club, Capital Health, church ministerial, city council, FCSS
and the general public.

The committee currently functions as a subcommittee of Leduc FCSS.
