DRUG DEALER AVOIDS PRISON

A teenaged drug dealer is being made to dedicate his time to volunteer
work for the next two years to avoid jail.

Jayce Cvar, 19, was sentenced Friday to a year of house arrest,
followed by a year of probation. In each year, he must perform 200
hours of community service to be arranged through his parole officer.

"Consider yourself fortunate for not going behind bars," Ontario court
Justice Saul Nosanchuk told Cvar in sentencing him.

OPP officers raided Cvar's Robinet Road home on Jan. 19. They found
him in his bedroom with six friends. From the room, police seized
cocaine, marijuana, hashish and ecstacy which, combined, had a street
value of about $18,500.

Guilty Plea

Cvar pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine and marijuana for the
purpose of trafficking. Charges were dropped against the others found
in the home.

"Mr. Cvar has taken the rap for them," said Nosanchuk.

While the prosecution asked he be made to serve 12 to 18 months behind
bars, Nosanchuk said he wanted to give Cvar "the benefit of the doubt"
with house arrest.

This was Cvar's first criminal conviction.

While the judge characterized Cvar as "unfocused and purposeless" he
said the teen "comes from a good home.

"His mother has been able to provide a stable home for him."
