STUDENT ARRESTED FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING

A Eufaula High School senior arrested and charged with trafficking in
cocaine last week will be tried as an adult in Barbour County District
Court.

Andrew Douglas Champion, 17, of 228 Highland Ave., was arrested
Thursday after a traffic stop for improper window tinting Wednesday on
Highland Avenue shortly after 10 p.m.

After the stop, police obtained written consent from Champion's mother
to search the car based on information from an informant.

During the search, officers found the following items:

38 plastic bags containing a powder substance field-tested for
cocaine

A plastic bag containing 500 pills believed to be Xanax

A blue pillbox containing 70 pills believed to be Xanax

A plastic bag containing 45 pills believed to be Valium

A plastic bag containing 17 pills believed to be Lortab.

Other items found included an electronic scale, two purple straws and
empty, small plastic bags.

Champion was also charged with felony unlawful possession of a
controlled substance, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and
misdemeanor improper tint.

Eufaula Police Captain Tim Marsh said his department wants to catch
the person who is supplying the drugs.

"We're certainly interested in the supplier," Marsh said. "We're going
to do everything we can to bring him to court."

Eufaula City Schools released the results of a survey earlier this
year of 1,149 students in grades six through 12. The results of the
March survey included some shocking answers from high school students:

Eufaula High School said they have done marijuana in the past year

Some 13.4 percent of seniors said they have used cocaine in the past
year

63 percent of 12th grade students said they have used beer within the
past year

More than one in four (26.1 percent) of Eufaula High School juniors
said they have used marijuana in the past year

Some 10.2 percent of juniors said they have used cocaine within the
past year

More than half (56.3 percent) of juniors said they have used beer
within the past year

Some 9 percent of sophomores said they used cocaine within the past
year

Almost 25 percent of sophomores said they used marijuana within the
past year

Some 45 percent of sophomores said they used beer within the past
year. (An even higher rate, 54 percent, of freshmen said they used
beer within the past year.)

27 percent of freshmen at Eufaula High School reported using marijuana
within the past year

About 8 percent of freshmen said they used cocaine.
