KUHL SHOULD BACK REPEAL OF DRUG RULE IN COLLEGE AID PLAN

On July 22, U.S.  Rep.  John R.  Kuhl Jr.  voted against an amendment in the U.S.  House Education and Workforce Committee that, if passed, would have granted thousands of deserving students the financial aid they need to go to college.

The law in question is a little-known provision of the Higher Education Act that denies financial aid eligibility to students with prior drug convictions, no matter how minor.  Since this law came into effect in 2000, more than 160,500 students have been denied financial aid.

If Kuhl looked deeper into the implications of this law, he would realize that it serves no purpose but to create roadblocks on the path to education and recovery.  As a proud New Yorker, I hope that Kuhl will see the flaws of this law in the future and take a stand to reinstate aid to students who are trying to get their lives back on track.
