COUNTY POLITICIANS WANT LOCAL DRUG TASK FORCE

A Parkland County councillor wants to set up a task force to look at the
drug problem in the tri-municipal region.

Pat Brennan gave a notice of motion during Tuesday's general committee
meeting. He indicated he plans to bring forward the motion to develop a task
force at a July 5 meeting.

Drug enforcement is a provincial responsibility, Brennan said, "but as a
community I don't think we can afford to wait."

Brennan said he wants to work with both the Town of Stony Plain and City of
Spruce Grove on this initiative, as well as bring in representatives from
the RCMP and local school boards.

He said he wanted the task force included as an item in the county's 2006
budget, estimating it may cost in the neighbourhood of $250,000.

Several of Brennan's counterparts voiced their approval of the concept.

Mayor Phyllis Kobasiuk said she was in support of Brennan's notice of
motion.

"I think it's something we have to address sooner rather than later," added
Coun. Jo Szady.
