AIRPORT BUST NETS 9 KG OF HEROIN

A major drug bust at Vancouver International Airport has taken 90,000
doses of heroin worth about $1 million off city streets.

"It's a substantial amount," said Sgt. Dave Goddard of the RCMP's
Greater Vancouver Drug Section.

Six unidentified Vancouver-area men in their 20s are facing charges
after Thursday's dramatic airport bust, which shocked some passengers
when undercover officers with guns drawn arrested the men and seized
nine kilograms of what is suspected to be heroin hidden in two suitcases.

Goddard said lab analysis is necessary to confirm the drugs are
heroin.

Police suspect the drugs originated in India and one "mule" carried
them in the suitcases on a domestic flight from Toronto to Vancouver,
where the five men met him.

The six arrested men were released. Numerous charges are
pending.

Goddard said the bust was the result of a "short-term" international
investigation. Police believe organized crime was involved.
