POLICE LAUNCH DRUGS CRACKDOWN

LONDON - Police have launched a three-month countrywide crackdown on cocaine and heroin dealers, aiming to disrupt their markets and close drug dens, the government says.

Police officers from 32 forces in England and Wales will take part in "Operation Crackdown" which will target those involved with the most serious class A drugs.

"There is a clear link between class A drugs and crime, including gun crime, and the government is determined to do everything it can to tackle harm caused by drugs," said Home Office minister, Caroline Flint.

The drive will involve raids on houses where drug dealing is taking place, stop-and-search operations, undercover policing and covert surveillance.

It will also focus on seizing illegal firearms.

"Class A drugs remain a pressing priority for the police service, given the threat and danger they present to society," said Andy Hayman, Norfolk's Chief Constable.
