LHS STUDENT MAY FACE 45-DAY SUSPENSION AFTER DRUGS FOUND

A Lebanon High School student could face a 45-day suspension for possessing marijuana on campus after he was caught with the drug Friday.

R-3 Superintendent Duane Widhalm said Lebanon police were called to the school after administrators found the drug in the student's possession.

"It was first reported to a teacher, who then reported it to the administration," Widhalm said.  "Of course, as with any drug-possession case under our policy, police are contacted and brought in."

Widhalm said the student received an immediate 10-day suspension.  Widhalm was scheduled to meet with the student and his parents today to determine what further action would be taken.

Widhalm said because the incident was the student's first offense, he could face a maximum 45-day suspension.  Under district policy, that suspension could be lessened if the student agrees to undergo counseling.

"There is some leeway there, under the policy," Widhalm said.  "If students go through a drug assessment, then the suspension can be reduced."
