GRAND JURY INDICTS SEVEN COUNTY GUARDS

SUNBURY -- A long-rumored grand jury investigation involving guards at
the Northumberland County Prison was revealed as truth in April with
seven indictments against former or then-current corrections officers.

The charges ranged from providing drugs and other contraband to
prisoners to smoking marijuana with them to assaulting them.

The grand jury had been convened the year before -- without public
knowledge, as allowed by law -- and met occasionally to hear testimony
before ordering the indictments.

Charged were Christopher Guise, Kazimir "K.C." Grohowski, Holly Yucha,
Nathaniel Wohlheiter, Hubert "Hank" Dorkoski, Floyd Hulsizer III and
Shawn Dinklocker.

Charges against Guise were later dropped, with Senior Deputy Attorney
General Michael Madeira declaring at a May hearing that there was not
enough evidence to prosecute the case. A side story remains, however.
The county prison board, which had suspended Guise and other
then-current guards who were charged, voted in November to formally
terminate Guise despite him no longer being a defendant. One week
later, Guise announced plans to file a federal lawsuit against the
county, claiming that his civil rights have been violated.
