DRUG USE WIDESPREAD AMONG POLISH STUDENTS

Warsaw, Poland, Jul. 8 (UPI) -- A new survey suggested Polish students have
easy access to a range of illegal drugs with 20 percent admitting to using
them, local media reported Thursday.

The survey by the National Bureau for Combating Drug Use was based on
interviews with 1,550 students in more than 60 Polish universities.

Around 67 percent of respondents said it was easy to obtain soft drugs such
as marijuana. Almost 52 percent of students said it was easy to obtain
amphetamines, 40 percent said it was easy to obtain ecstasy and 33 percent
said it was easy to get LSD.

Officials say drug use has become an important part of youth culture for
many students in a country where drug use was almost unknown under
communism, which came to an end in Poland in 1989.
