AFGHANISTAN TO JOIN IRAN AND PAKISTAN IN FIGHT AGAINST DRUGS

ISLAMABAD: The government of Afghanistan agreed to sign a memorandum of
understanding (MoU) with Pakistan and Iran on controlling the regional drug
trade during a two-day inter-governmental technical committee meeting that
ended on Tuesday.

The Afghan government was a first-time participant in the meeting that was
held under the auspices of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

Pakistan and Iran already have a MoU to check narcotics smuggling in the
region. The Afghan government was also invited to sign the MoU. The Afghan
delegation agreed. The MoU will be signed later. During the meeting,
cross-border narcotics smuggling was discussed in detail. The importance of
law enforcement agencies sharing information on the narcotics trade and
traders on a monthly and per-incident basis was emphasised. staff report
