COPS HIT $100M-ILESTONE

Crime Stoppers Helped Police Dismantle $1.6 Million In Grow Ops Last Month
Alone

Calgary Crime Stoppers has reached an impressive milestone, getting $100
million worth of illicit drugs off the street thanks to tips from the
public since the program began in 1982. President Grant Hardman said last
month was particularly fruitful for the non-profit anti-crime agency as
five grow-operations worth $1.6 million were dismantled by tipsters.

"I don't know if that's a record, it may be, but it certainly was a good
month," Hardman said.

In addition, three robberies were solved along with a break-and-enter and
theft resulting in nine charges.

But the invaluable agency can't exist without public support.

Recognizing that, Lakeside Golf Club in Chestermere is hosting a charity
golf-a-thon on June 21 with proceeds going to Crime Stoppers.

"In the 10 years (they've been hosting the tournament), they've raised
almost $500,000 dollars," said Hardman.

STARS air ambulance has been the beneficiary of that cash in the past and
organizers decided to lend a hand to Crime Stoppers this year.

"We're hoping to raise somewhere in the vicinity of $30,000," Hardman said.

The money would help fund crime education and prevention programs and pad
the cash reward fund for those who provide information that leads to an
arrest, the recovery of stolen property or seizure of illicit drugs.

Calgary Crime Stoppers has received 1,394 tips so far this year and 35,405
since 1982 resulting in $842,075 in rewards being paid out.

To participate in the charity golf tournament, teams of four must pledge at
least is $500 per team or pay $160.50 per player, which includes 36 holes
of golf, powercarts, breakfast, lunch and an awards banquet, team and skill
prizes and team photos.

There will also be an auction for a ride-along in the Calgary Police
Service's HAWC helicopter.

To register for the Lakeside charity golf-a-thon benefitting Calgary Crime
Stoppers, call 569-9111.

Hurry, because there's little room left.
