BOARD APPROVES DRUG TESTING AT TAFT HIGH

Before school starts this fall, restrictions will be getting tighter in the
testing for drugs at Taft High School after the TUHS Board approved the
"Extra Curricular Activity Code of Ethics" in last night's board meeting at
Taft High School.

According to Superintendent Curt Dubost, testing will begin this summer and
will be random.

"There will not be an initial drug test of each athlete this summer," said
Dubost.

Under the system, if a student tests positive, they will be asked to take a
second test to make sure the first one was right. If the second one
confirms the first, the parents or guardians are informed and can appeal.

If a student tests positive, he or she will be enrolled in a counseling and
rehabilitation program and face several penalties.

In other news at the meeting, students that are way behind in their units
will have an opportunity to catch up on their work after the Taft Union
High School Board voted to add on a couple of classrooms to the Buena Vista
High School Campus.

One program, opportunity, will deal with students who are freshmen and
sophomores. The other is a continuation program for students 16 years and over.
