LISBON TAXES

To The Editor:

While I sympathize with the Lisbon School budget crises, I disagree with
going after the taxpayers to make up the difference (Lisbon Teachers,
Ogdensburg Advance March 28).

President Bush in his pledge to "leave no child behind" made a ten-fold
increase (from $2 million to $25 million) not for computers, school
supplies, or wages. For drug testing in our schools.

Taxpayers' fund DARE, $1.2 billion a year and $900 million for anti-drug
ads. Maybe it's time the Lisbon Teachers Association approaches the
government instead of making the taxpaying neighbor feel responsible for
dumbing down our kids.

I personally sent a card to President Bush with thousands of other members
of the Drug Policy Alliance.

This may be of interest to the Association: Parents and Educators for the
Reform of Drug Laws (PERDL) http://www.perdl.com/ and Educators for
Sensible Drug Policy (EFSDP) http://www.efsdp.org/. Let's put tax dollars
already out there, back into education.

I do hope to set a good example, that when drug testing comes to Lisbon
Central School, the President and Vice President of the Teachers
Association will be the first in line.
