Lots of work went into getting this event in place. Thanks to Const. Beth Chipperfield and the staff of the West Shore RCMP for all their efforts. There still is a need to rally support for the DARE program. The $10,000 that was to be raised would be enough to carry the program for one year. Organizers were very disappointed in having to cancel the dance and auction, as everyone knows the importance of this valuable program. The auction gifts that were received will be auctioned off at the annual RCMP Golf Tournament in May and all monies will go to the DARE program. If you would like to donate to help out the program, please contact Const. Chipperfield at 474-2264. The committee would like to thank all the people who donated to help the event. Thanks to Lisa and Michael Forbes of Ocean 98.5 and the Ocean Community Cruiser, the Royal Canadian Legion branch #91, Marge and the kitchen staff of the Legion, the Beach Byrds and Gerry Karagainis who all donated time, all the people who offered to donate food, and also to all the businesses who donated either money or auction items. Fundraiser launch a success The highly visible big white tents at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre attracted about 1,000 people last Saturday to support SportsMaps.ca, a division of TecFor Technology Group at its launch and fundraiser/barbecue. The driving forces behind this fundraiser were Kevin Yakamovitch and Clay Crust. More than 100 prizes were given out to supporters who dropped by. These items were donated by the businesses that advertised and supported the sports map. Proceeds from the event will go to local charities and minor sports. SportsMaps.ca would like to thank all West Shore businesses who participated in this endeavour and special thanks to the following corporate sponsors: Olympic View Golf Course, IMAX, Comfort Inn & Suites, View Royal Dairy Queen, Windsor Plywood, Pennzoil, Island Savings, Colwood Esso, West Shore Chamber of Commerce, Ultimate Water Store and TecFor Technology Group. Pete's Tent and Awning donated the tents and Home Depot donatd the grill to cook the food. Colwood Thrifty Foods donated the hotdogs, Island Bakery and Costco donated the buns, and Langford Wal-Mart donated the drinks. ABC Restaurant donated the burgers and Juan de Fuca Recreation provided the space. One of the most popular prizes given was the autographed Victoria Salsa hockey club jersey donated by Ron Cheeke. Jay Huxtable and Kyle Yakamovitch were busy over the grill cooking burgers and hotdogs and Gerry Yakamovitch was busy handing out drinks. The CFAX Community Cruiser was on location providing music and entertainment for the crowds. A well-done job by all the volunteers and supporters! By the time I left the site, they had raised over $500. Mayor's Funspiel The City of Langford fourth-annual invitational Mayor's Mid-Winter Blues Curling Funspiel takes place Saturday, March 20 at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre. Draw time is 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. There is a $10 entry fee per person. Registration deadline is March 15. You can enter as an individual or a team, two games per team, four ends per game. Prize donations are gratefully accepted. There will be a no-host bar. Space is limited. For a registration form, contact Lindy Kaercher at 478-7882. All proceeds will help fund a bus for youth sports. Around town The Rotary Club of West Shore meets every Friday from noon to 1:15 p.m. on the second floor, Coach Room at the Railside Grill. This week's guest speaker is Rob Buchan, a Langford city planner. He will speak about the interface fire hazard plan for Langford. For more info, call Vern Polichek at 478-2455. New faces, new places It's great to see the smiling face of Cindy Snyder back at Hatley Park Scotiabank. Cindy and her hubby, Darren Snyder of Kal-Lay Plumbing and Heating, have something to celebrate. It's their daughter Mareena's first birthday on March 19! New board for seniors The Juan de Fuca Seniors 55+ Activity Centre has recently elected Robbie Clarke as president, Ralph Plumridge as first vice-president, Dal Greig as second vice-president, Mary Lou Knight as secretary, and Maxine Bayers as treasurer to their 2004 executive. Special funding needed West Shore RCMP seek funding for their summer student program, which gives a student first-hand experience with the role of police and the justice system. In order to support the summer student, the RCMP needs to raise $9,500 to cover the term of employment, which is May to August. This student would be given a six-week training course in Chilliwack, similar to what volunteer auxiliary constables receive.
