TALKING ABOUT DRUGS...

Mayerthorpe Freelancer - I was astonished by the reaction and comments I
received about my article "Meth problem Hits' local teens," published in
the Feb. 18 edition of the Freelancer.

The article focused on teens and their experiences with drugs in the
community, particularly methamphetamine.

It provoked a divided reaction among readers.

Some felt it sensationalized and promoted Meth use. They pointed out that
the article failed to address the destructive effects Meth abuse can have
on the user and their family and the danger it poses to the public and the
community.

Others were relieved the issue was brought to the public's attention and
saw it as forum for discussion and a starting place.

The article was initiated by a teen that felt drug use as a problem in
Mayerthorpe.

She demanded that this receive coverage from the media and be brought to
the attention of the community.

Although the article was controversial, I was glad that people took the
time to read and respond.

After talking with teens it became clear that meth is an acute problem that
has crept into teen culture in many facets.

Since it was published, many people have addressed the issue in various
capacities.

I can only hope that parents, educators and community members will continue
to talk about drug abuse and recognize some of the challenges teens face.
