STUDENTS HEADING FOR SKI HILL CONFINED TO BUS FOR NINE HOURS DURING DRUG SEARCH

A U.S. tour operator is angry that Quebec border guards detained 592
ski-bound students for nine hours after finding 46 fake IDs, three ounces
of marijuana and some magic mushrooms. The students were made to wait on
the bus from 4 a.m. until 1 p.m. last Friday. Daniel Callahan, of Ski
Travel Unlimited, said offenders should have been arrested -- which they
were not -- quickly rather than have all students suffer. Mr. Callahan will
tell tourism officials and the Canadian embassy in the United States that
the incident has jeopardized millions of tourism dollars. Union head Claude
Bisson defended the guards' actions. "Would you like us to let people in
with fake IDs and narcotics?" he asked. "We are Canadians but we are not
stupid."
