CRIME BRIE?

There was a lot of cheddar last week about a police report that there
is a different kind of black market operating in the St. John's area.

According to that report, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says a
needle-toting man, who allegedly assaulted another guy last Monday
night, had just fled a Ropewalk Lane grocery store after allegedly
stealing several packages of cheese.

Apparently, this wasn't an isolated incident. It has happened mozza
times. There has actually been a bit of a crime brie going on. Krafty
thieves are, according to police, swiping the cheese and selling it to
restaurants and pizza parlours. And you don't have to be a Cheez Whiz
to realize they are doing so for drug money.

The thefts are no doubt a grating issue for grocery stores and our
officers in blue (uniforms, not the cheese). As the thief probably
heard, "this is nacho cheese" as he was being carted away. Obviously,
they are cheesed off and feta up, and they want the muensters to stop.

Despite the cheesy nature of this editorial, we're behind them 100 per
cent. Drug fueled theft -- of anything, including blocks of cheese --
is a serious, serious problem anyway you slice it. Hopefully, the
limberglers will be caught, the delivery of justice will be Swiss and
the punishment will look gouda on them.
