DA KINE OWNER WILL MAKE RENEWED BID FOR BAIL, LAWYER SAYS

VANCOUVER - The owner of the Da Kine Smoke and Beverage Shop on east
Vancouver's hip Commercial Drive, which was shut down in a massive
police raid, will make a renewed bid for bail, her lawyer said Wednesday.

Carol Gwilt has been in custody since Sept. 17 after allegedly
breaching conditions of her earlier bail.

Lawyer Jason Gratl said Gwilt will seek a detention-review hearing in
B.C. Supreme Court within the next couple of weeks.

Gwilt and several others arrested during the Sept. 9 raid appeared in
provincial court Wednesday. The case was adjourned until Oct. 20 to
allow several of the co-accused to get lawyers.

All are charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of
trafficking and Gwilt is also charged with benefitting from the
proceeds of crime, as well as breaching bail conditions that barred
all the accused from being anywhere near marijuana.

"She's not enjoying her time in custody," said Gratl. "She's finding
it difficult but she's bearing up as well as can be expected under the
circumstances."
