Cameron Students Leap First Drug Testing Bar

No Cameron students who took the first round of drug tests last week tested positive.  A second round is planned for next week.

"We're clean," Yoe High Principal Clint McMahon said Monday.

He said 225 high school and about 70 junior high students were tested Aug.  5 and were all negative.

While those numbers include most football, volleyball and cross country athletes in grades 7-12 and high school band students, others still need to be tested.

The next opportunity is scheduled for Saturday, Aug.  21 at 9 a.m.  in the new Yoe gym.

Students in grades 7-12 who plan to participate in "all clubs, musical performances, dramatic productions, student government and any other activity or group that participates in contests, competitions or community service projects on behalf of or as a representative of the school." must pass a drug test.

They will also be subject to random drug testing throughout the year.

McMahon said forms will be available next Saturday for parents to sign, giving their consent for the urine test.

If a student's sample is positive in a preliminary test, the parents will be notified and asked for medical or prescription information that could have influenced the test.  A second test will be performed on the same sample taking the medical information into account.  The results of the second test are the official results.

Students who test positive will be required to undergo counseling before being re-admitted into extracurricular activities.

A complete copy of the policy that details the consequences for first, second and third or greater offenses will be given to students during the first week of school.

Monday is opening day for 2004-2005 Cameron students.
