HEROIN BUST AT BUS DEPOT

In their biggest heroin bust ever, Guelph Police seized more than
half-a-million dollars worth of heroin stitched into the piping of
traditional Afghan dresses on a Toronto-bound Greyhound bus Aug. 2.

But the street value could be even higher, once the drugs are analyzed
and weighed, says Insp. Peter McEwen.

"If this is pure, 100 per cent heroin, the street value will be
substantially more than the estimated value," said McEwen.

Guelph Police, Wellington OPP and Kitchener RCMP boarded the bus at 7
a.m. at the downtown depot to arrest a 43-year-old Richmond Hill man
and seized 2.3 kilos of heroin worth $800,000.

The 29 imported dresses were folded and individually wrapped in
cellophane packages and all packed in a single duffel bag. They likely
came into Canada over the long weekend as luggage.

"We don't know if they came to this gentleman directly," said McEwen,
but he added they weren't being commercially delivered to any store.

The man is charged with possession for the purposes of
trafficking.

Guelph Police was the lead force in the investigation, which is still
ongoing.

Police have sent a sample to the Centre for Forensic Sciences to see
what percentage of pure heroin is in the drug. Heroin bought on the
street, said McEwen typically contains 8 to 11 per cent heroin, with
the rest made up of cutting agents.
