DRUGS NOT POPULAR UNTIL PROHIBITED

James J. Maher's letter comparing marijuana in schools with alcohol
(Jan. 7 Herald) is historically accurate, although not in the manner
the author seems to believe.

Considering that prohibition of both substances has resulted in
increased youth access, substance abuse and homicides, the drug war is
immoral and arguably illegal.

With the exception of Ritalin and caffeine, no one pushed drugs in
schools until they were prohibited.
