DEAL WITH THE REAL PROBLEMS

As 2004 approaches, the Paul Martin government could make an easy decision
by legalizing marijuana and then deal with real problems.

Marijuana should be treated the same as alcohol. In Ontario, it should be
sold through LCBO-like establishments that are monitored and controlled by
the government. Two objectives would be met: marjiuana could be taxed, and
its illegal growth could be curtailed if not eliminated.

But just as importantly, our court system wouldn't be as burdened with
simple possession charges.

People who smoke marijuana may be foolish, but they should not be treated
as criminals, just as those who drink alcohol are not treated as criminals.

And those who abuse marijuana should be treated the same as those who abuse
alcohol.
