DRUG PROBLEM DISCUSSED AT COUNCIL TABLE

Edson's methamphetamine problem has been the topic of various meetings in
the community and there are more discussions scheduled for the future.

At the regular meeting of Edson town council on June 17, Mayor Gary Mahon
spoke about some of the meetings he's attended and how more discussion is
needed to help solve the problem.

The problem and possible solutions will be discussed further at a
protective services committee meeting on June 27, which is open to public.
The meeting will be held at the Edson Fire Hall beginning at 10 a.m.

Coun. Carlo Klemm also spoke of the initial meeting, chaired by the
protective services committee, on June 9 and agreed that another meeting
was necessary.

"It was a real eye-opener," Klemm said.

In attendance for the meeting on June 9 were protective services personnel,
including probation and police officers as well as political dignitaries,
including town councillors and representatives.

Town paving stalled

Paving in the Town of Edson has taken a brief break, said town manager
Clarence Joly.

"We can't get the crew back in town until the end of July, at the
earliest," he said.

As for the Glenwood paving project, Joly said it is out of the town's hands
for now, as EXH Engineering is in charge of that project. But Joly did say
tenders have gone out and he expects the paving will start soon.

Meetings cancelled

Town council meetings during July and August have been re-evaluated and the
meetings have been reduced to one per month. July 15 and August 12 will be
the only meetings of town council during the summer.

Town gets grant

The Town of Edson has received $468,900 from the Alberta government.

The money represents the total grant payment of the 2003 Streets
Improvement Program.
