The gathering took place in the park next to City Hall in the central Alberta city's downtown area. Police watched the protest, but said it remained peaceful. Marijuana is considered a controlled substance under Canadian law, and possession and cultivation of the drug are illegal. Advocates want the government to decriminalize possession of small amounts for personal use. Red Deer was the scene of a $500,000 pot bust last Wednesday, with the RCMP seizing 475 plants from an illegal grow operation in a home in the north end. Two men have been charged with cultivation of marijuana and possession for the purpose of trafficking. - --- MAP posted-by: Alex
