NEW EVIL IN HEROIN CAPITAL OF SCOTLAND

THE fishing town of Fraserburgh is struggling to cope with a drug culture
that has exploded in the last five years.

Health chiefs and police admit they face a desperate battle to rid the once
bustling port of its unwanted tag as Scotland's heroin capital.

At one surgery in the town, a staggering one in five young men is a drug
addict, with at least two new cases visiting their GP every week.

There are now an estimated 500 heroin users in the town and crack cocaine
is the new evil bringing even more misery to the drug-ravaged port.

One local police officer said: "Fraserburgh people are sick of the town
always being labelled the drug capital.

"But, when you see the extent of the problem, it's hard to shake off the tag.

"We're getting names of alleged crack dealers every few days. Some are
people we've never even heard of."

Crack cocaine is highly addictive and can be created at home, using a
microwave oven, water and ammonia or baking soda to remove the
hydro-chloride from the powder version of the drug.

It gets its name from the sound the crystals make as the rocks of crack are
formed during production.

It gives users an intense high and an intense craving for more.
