MESA'S DRUG-TESTING IS UN-AMERICAN

The Tribune recently reported that the Arizona Appeals Court decided
that the City of Mesa has the right to drug test any employee at any
time, for no reason other than city employment. It is a sad sign of
the times that such news was not accompanied by the informed outrage
of an upset citizenry.

Have we all become so docile that we are not concerned with
fundamental American rights? Have we become so accustomed to the
intrusive authority of government that we see nothing wrong with this
you-must-prove your innocence whenever-we-say-so policy? Have our
courts become so enthralled with legal technicalities that they have
forgotten or chose to ignore the basic constitutional concepts of
individual freedom and privacy?

The real danger to any strong and prosperous society such as ours has
always been from within, from a failure of citizens to resist the ever
growing and increasingly intrusive power of the City of Mesa for such
an un-American policy, and double shame on a court system that fails
to defend our rights as Americans.
