'SAYING NO IS NOT ENOUGH' COMES TO CITY SCHOOLS

Raising children to avoid substance abuse is one of the more difficult
parenting tasks.

Burnaby school district is co-sponsoring a workshop that might help.

'Saying No Is Not Enough: Helping kids make wise decisions about drugs' is
being presented tomorrow evening, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, March 6, at
Burnaby Mountain secondary.

The workshop is free and open to parents with children of any age, other
family members and anyone else looking for strategies to support families
and prevent substance abuse.

Robert Schwebel, an author of several books and expert on substance-abuse
prevention, will present the workshop. He also designed the successful
program, 'The Seven Challenges: Making Wise Decisions About Drugs.'

Schwebel will provide parents with proactive strategies for preventing
substance abuse and realistically address its use among young people.
Topics include beginning with children, helping resist peer pressure,
creating a climate for communication, staying alert and responding to
potential problems and teaching kids to make wise decisions.
