THE IMPACT OF ICE

Editor:

I attended a meeting sponsored by "I Care Enough" (ICE), an ice support
group in Naalehu for those on or recovering from ice. It was a first class
presentation also featuring several recovering ice addicts who testified
about their life with ice. The presentations by the primary speakers were
excellent and no matter how many times that I hear them, I always learn
something new. Over the last four years I have listened to at least a dozen
recovering ice addicts testify and I have yet to hear one say anything about
how X number of years of ice addiction has affected their health since their
recovery began.

After a little research (men only), I have discovered that the following
problems were reported and one man reported being afflicted by all of them:
Kidney problems; prostate problems; seizures; migraine headaches; memory
loss; speech impediment; strokes; hearing demon voices; ADHD; bright lights
in the eyes during loud noises; can't hold a job; can't handle stress; and
heart problems. All report having at least half of these, which no doubt
leads to a reduced life expectancy.

As part of the education process against ice with our young people (non
adults), it would seem logical that information like this should be a part
of the education process from grades 1 through 12. It should also be a part
of the educational programs for adults. If they ignore it, they will soon
find that it may be too late. Formal studies should be done which I'm sure
would expand my data.
